Just another beautiful day in paradise, we are going to bed earlier than normal, around midnight. But we go to bed without concern, John Carlos always goes to bed without being told and Samantha is lights out around ten p.m. Our window fan is running, we do the normal husband and wife stuff, bathe, teeth and I do a final check of the doors and windows, and everything looks fine, can't help it, making sure the house is secure is like time moving without seeing the clock, I have to do it so I can sleep. I remind myself to get batteries for the portable motion detector as soon as possible. We sleep with clothes on, something else unusual; we normally are naked as the day we were born. Sleep. Susy sits up in bed like the girl from 'The Exorcist', I mean, it's like a violent from the waist up sitting motion but no jet vomiting or head spinning, I feel this happening only like a husband can and she is instantly tapping me on the shoulder very hard and whispering, in Spanish, pappi, pappi someone is in the house! Okay so like every other husband in the world at one-thirty in the morning, I look at her and go, huh! She is now shakingmy arm and pointing to the door, I really think she is having a very vivid nightmare and acting out. Susy has actually pushed me out of bed during a nightmare so I thought this was another nightmare. All this happens in seconds of course, I follow her finger to our bedroom door and a light is on...that's strange we always leave a bathroom light on with the door closed so the kids won't kill themselves getting to it, but this light was a bedroom light. Susy still has my arm and is pulling me over to look through our open door her hand is extended pointing like a zombie. I see the back of a stranger; he is not much taller than Samantha and somewhat fat. I grasp slower then I wished to that a stranger was in the house; I reach for my Smith & Wesson nine millimeter!

It was amazing to read about a life so far removed from my own.It makes you appreciate the freedom and security that we have in the US. We're a land of immigrants and truly don't know what the person standing next to us has been through.
